In college, my motorcycle tires traced East Africa's geography, running over lush hills to Mt. Kenya's
10,000 feet, then down the escarpment to the expansive Great Rift Valley, and finally over treacherous sandy
roads to the coastline.

That compelling beauty opened my eyes to color,
texture, shape and movement. Back
in Virginia, I soon quit my career in social work.

With $1600
and a ticket back
to Nairobi, I set out to build a portfolio to impress NY editors. The planned one-year trip turned into 5
years in Africa and 4 years in
Asia as one photojournalistic essay led
to another. |
