Amassing a collection of 150,000 books, manuscripts and other documents spanning four centuries, Blockson in one of America's preeminent Black historians. His life-time work housed in the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection at Temple University is the wellspring of The Liberty Bell Era: The African American Story.

Blockson is author of 11 previous books, co-founder of the African American Museum in Philadelphia, recipient of three honorary doctorate degrees and has served as chairperson of the National Parks Services' Underground Railroad Advisory Committee. He has lectured across America as well as Europe, the Caribbean, Africa, and South America.
